The Ringtail Cafe is one cell of a larger organization which has no official title and is often refered to simply as “The Organization” or “The Families.” The organization was originally a collection of families, most of whom were ringtails. The organization was originally a cabal of families working together behind the scenes, towards a common goal. They possess great wealth and influence within the business and political worlds. They were originally benevolant, if personally motivated. Over the years however, the organization has become more corrupt, with individual cells and factions growing more distant from one another. The organization keeps caches of money, weapons, and other useful resources in safe houses across the world. The information about these places and the organization in general is closely guarded. Inclusion into the organization was originally based on family lineage. The Organization will however induct new members that are not part of the families if they feel that they would be of great value (for example, Adam in issue 1.) The Organization is typically broken into smaller groups under a single commander. Different branches have more or less involvement with the main branch. Wanda’s branch has very little to do with the larger organization. The larger organization is very powerful, politically and financially. Its primary goal at the moment is to maintain that power.

The League of Villainous Evil (LoVE)
LoVE, Initially just “The League” is a loose collection of small gangs, thugs, and loosely aligned criminal organizations. Originally, the League was a more organized group, with an infrastructure very similar to the Ringtail organization. The League was in fact originally part of the Ringtail Organization, however there was a massive falling out between some of the families. This falling out resulted in a number of the families creating an offshoot, “The League.” With less resources and members -and due to continuing pressure from The Organization- the League slowly lost resources members and power through various forms of attrition. Desperate to bolster their numbers, the League began to open up to less reputable membership, absorbing small gangs and crime syndicates. Very little of the original League is still in place. Eventually, Diamond found what was left of the League and took over, beginning to reorganize the collection of small groups into a larger force. At some point in the recent regime the additional “of Villainous Evil” was added onto the League by some members, and simply stuck. The symbol for LoVE is a stylized heart. The origin of he symbol has to do with Diamond. LoVE is typically organized into very small groups, with many members being completely independent of other agents. Those that work together are typically very small in number, such as Leila and her Trio.
NEXT is an omni-corporation with a heavy emphasis on medical technologies. To the public eye, they are primarily responsible for pharmaceuticals and medical equipment. Behind the scenes however, they are responsible for developing cutting edge technologies and treatments. The company has existed in some form or another for decades, and in recent years began to develop treatments for government contracts. The government, in the wake of recent wars wanted a super soldier, and worked with NEXT do develop it. Attempting to give soldiers augmented strength, intelligence, durability and enhanced abilities the initial results were not promising, resulting in many deaths. The program was broken down into multiple stages, with the first stage being augmented strength, intelligence, endurance and stamina. This was to allow the soldiers to survive the more taxing second portion of the testing, which involved an effort to give them enhanced abilities, super speed, telekinesis, rapid healing, etc, abilities beyond the realm of human potential. The first stage program proved to have mixed results, with only a small percentage of the treatments actually succeeding. Those that moved onto the second stage testing produced far less promising results. Most treatments resulted in death. Among the small surviving fraction, the majority became insane, or even mindless. A very small fraction made it through the second stage without ill effect, but seemed to exhibit no enhanced abilities, more commonly they simply had altered skin pigment, fur colour, or eye colour (Jaime, Candystripe). In actuality, they had simply not manifested yet and would not for a long time. In the eyes of the government, the project was considered a failure. The government pulled the plug on funding, and shut down the project. NEXT however wished to continue the development of the program, and did so illicitly. Their continued efforts were eventually tested upon unsuspecting individuals (notably, the orphans that were rescued by Adam in issue 1) and as awareness of their efforts grew, they began to sanitize the project and try to cover their tracks (the fire they started.) NEXT plans to continue their research, and has begun to abduct, coerce, or otherwise acquire individuals for their program. This will eventually lead to the formation of their own super solider group, who are unofficially titled The Mythicals.
Homeland Elite Response Operations Taskforce (HERO Taskforce)
In the aftermath of the work done by NEXT, the government was left with a formula that would successfully enhance a normal human being’s strength, intelligence, endurance and speed. However, fabricating the formula was extremely difficult and expensive. Because the formula was so cost prohibitive only a small batch was created. The military used this batch to create a small group of enhanced soldiers. These soldiers were not informed of the fact that they were enhanced, as far as they understood they were simply the most highly trained, elite members of the special forces. “Better trained, Better Equipped, Better prepared” was the slogan of the HERO Taskforce. The entire group was effectively one large public relations affair created by the government to draw attention away from other political issues. A television series, a line of toys, and other merchandise were created based around the characters. They are largely a ceremonial force, very rarely actually engaging in missions, however when they do they are typically the “last option” and given the most difficult, and critical of assignments. The individuals of the taskforce are unaware of the secret organizations, but because they are military they would view them as criminal, regardless of intent.

Though the military cut all ties with NEXT, the company continued to pursue the “better human” project. They used their refined version of the super soldier formula to create candidates capable of surviving the next phase of testing, or more accurately, with a marginally better chance of surviving the next phase. The success to death ratio was still rather small. Because of this, the list of available candidates quickly diminished until reaching the point where the company had to begin abducting candidates. Because of a desire to minimize attention drawn to them, they targeted individuals that would be missed the least. Orphans, Death Row inmates, Vagrants, Homeless people and other such outcasts were their primary targets. The final group of subjects were
Within the organization Jaime acts as second in command, however this is out of Wanda’s desire rather than his. Jaime serves as mission commander and recruiter for the most part. Jaime appears to have no ambition to rise further in the ranks of the organization. This is because Jaime is hiding from his old life, or arguably “finding a place to fade away.”
(unknown to readers)
In reality, Jaime’s real name is Aaron Summoner, and he is former military. He was part of the first wave of government sponsored NEXT experiments. When the wave was considered a failure, Jaime and the other survivors were given “medical discharges” in reality they were swept under the rug. Jaime’s fur colour was altered by the treatments. He used to be grey, but is now maroon. He actually is physically stronger, more resilient etc than average, but not so much as to be seen as superhuman, more like peak potential.
During the program, Jaime and the others grew very close, perhaps even intimately so. Christopher (Candystripe) for example has no compunctions of kissing Jaime (issue 6). Jaime’s best friend was Michael Argent, codename Bullet. When Bullet died, Jaime wanted nothing more to do with the military or government, and gained an intense hatred of NEXT.
Jaime changed his name and eventually fell in with the RTC organization. He was trained by Sable. The two have a great deal of friction. Jaime feels that Sable is willing to go to any lengths to maintain his cover, and does not trust the double agent, and is always waiting to see when they will be betrayed. Sable finds Jaime’s attitude to be cavalier with no real connections to the world anymore.
Orientation: Straight (Sorry Fuzzwolf)
Adam is the newest member of the organization, having been recruited into the RTC branch after a heroic act caught their attention. Adam is not used to the way things work in a secret society and serves as the audience proxy to introduce people into this world. Adam is hard-working, honest and an all around good guy, but he does have a limited tolerance for some people’s (mostly Jaime’s) antics.
As the eldest of many siblings, Adam has been given responsibility from a very young age, helping to raise and care for his brothers and sisters. He comes from a poor family and still helps out with a great many of their needs even now that he’s grown up and moved out. It’s for these reasons that he avoids alcohol, smoking, gambling and other vices. Adam feels very protective of those younger and more helpless than himself – this was the reason he rescued the endangered orphans prior to the beginning of the first issue, the act which has caught the attention of the Organization and other groups (the HERO Taskforce) as well.
Species: Maine Coon Cat
Wanda is the leader of the RTC branch of the organization. She is intelligent and highly dedicated to keeping her people safe. She doesn’t always agree with the decisions she receives from her higher ups but does her best to get the job done with a minimum of fuss.
(currently unknown to readers)
Wanda was formerly a thief with ties to organized crime. She was a high-profile cat burglar who had a reputation for stealing only the most difficult and challenging objects. She was at one time engaged to the son of an Asian crime boss (think the Yakuza). Her life of crime was curtailed when she was captured by the police. A member of the Organization showed up and offered to keep her from facing charges in return for her agreeing to work for them. She did and was relocated and worked her way up the ranks to become the leader of her current branch.
Lilac is a brilliant chemist. Her role in the organization is often to provide them with scientific aid and information. When there’s any question about the substance or composition of a thing, she is the one to figure out what it is. If they need something to eat away the metal on a lock or to explode on cue, she can provide that too.
Personality wise, Lilac is very upbeat and full of energy and enthusiasm. She sometimes comes across as very young because of her size and her cheerful attitude, but that can be very deceptive. Lilac is in a dedicated relationship with Nova and the two have been together for many years.
Species: Ringtailed Lemur
Patrick’s family has been in the organization in the past. His father’s family may even have been among some of the founding members, though that certainly doesn’t show through with Patrick’s current position. He is their front-man. Literally, he is the person in the front who runs the actual Cafe. This is probably the most stressful job in the entire branch, especially since they don’t hire any additional employees (the risk of being discovered is too great). The fact that he manages to keep up is a tribute to his dedication.
When he’s not working at the Cafe front, he can sometimes be found on missions. Despite his seeming clumsiness, Patrick is a natural acrobat and will often be sent on missions that require climbing, jumping and other feats of dexterity. In his very little time not spent working for the organization in one way or another, Patrick is a struggling music student at a local college.
In personality, Patrick is very soft spoken and a bit on the meek side. He is the most likely to go along with peer pressure and the least likely to voice his own opinion. He sometimes gets run roughshod by the others because of this.
Species: Red Panda
Orientation: ??? Straight, possibly demisexual(attracted to people on an individual basis)
Jake is brilliant, there’s no doubt about it. The word eccentric can also apply to him, especially for those who are trying to figure out just how his mind works. He is great with technology and spends most of his time in front of a screen (or in front of multiple screens). He created the AI program called MENU that runs on the RTC computers (as well as in the small mobile robot(s) that he uses for companionship. Whenever they need to get into a system, get past security or anything involving tech, Jake is their go-to guy.
He is the shortest member of the team, smaller even than Lilac (if you don’t count the huge ears), and more than a bit on the chubby side. He doesn’t let this bother him at all, as generally speaking he’s very happy with how he is. He can come across as very confident in his abilities and everything else and this may sometimes lead to errors in judgement (usually in the form of him being distracted). He an also be a bit of a troll and enjoys mildly harassing other people (usually online) to see their reactions. In addition to his interest in computers, he also loves pop culture, comics, video games and movies and has a tendency to collect and hoard books, toys and other items.
Species: Asian Linsang
Lori works as a model. Her appearance is what catches most eyes but beneath that and her sense of style, she has a keen eye and intelligence. She is the member of the RTC branch that is sent on the most risky undercover assignments, using her wiles and guile to gather needed information.
Lori’s parents are immigrants and she finds herself haunted by the fact that she’s only one generation removed from the poor conditions that her family grew up in. She is determined to make a name for herself and to overcome what she considers an unfortunate fact of her heritage. She took great care growing up to eliminate even a hint of any accent that might differentiate her from the others around her. It’s this ability to observe and fit in that works to her advantage when she’s taking assignments.
In her work she is no-nonsense and dedicated. She generally gets along well with her co-workers but can be seen as a bit aloof, especially with unproven people like Adam.
Nova’s people are often considered by some to be more primitive than the rest of the species around them. Native to the heated jungles, they are not commonly found in other – colder – areas. There is much said about the lizards – especially in rumours that they are not particularly intelligent – but very few know particular details. One thing is certain though, they are tremendously large and strong. As a female of her species, Nova is significantly smaller than her male counterparts, while still being quite large compared to her furry teammates.
Nova does not speak much, but she is a lot smarter than she seems. She is prone to aggression when provoked. She is the most likely member of the team to use natural weapons (claws and teeth) in battle rather than other objects. She never uses guns or things of that nature. Nova has a very dry sense of humour and it’s often hard to tell when she’s amused or joking. She can be very protective of certain people, most especially Lilac, but her stoic personality can make it difficult to tell her emotional state.
Sable is a long-standing member of the Organization, though this fact is not well known – and certainly not well publicized. He has been serving as an undercover agent for many years, infiltrating LoVE’s ranks and keeping an eye on their activities. There are those – like Jaime – who suspect that his loyalty has been compromised by the amount of time he’s spent among the enemy, but no one has yet been able to prove any duplicity.
Sable can come across as a bit anti-social, especially in his slightly ‘I’m better than you’ attitude. He does not often spend time with other Organization members, preferring his own company. He does not hold many people in very high regard.
Species: Fox/raccoon hybrid
Menu is the computer AI that Jake created. Menu helps to run functions at the base, keep track of missions and generally handle anything that Jake doesn’t feel like doing for whatever reason. Menu may be artificial in nature but his sense of self awareness and personality are both strong and he isn’t above doing things to demonstrate that he does have – some measure, at least – of free will. He is also a bit sassy/snarky in personality and is very good at playing those things up when he needs to.
“League of Villainous Evil”
Species: Giant Panda
Leila is a LoVE sub-commander. She has a trio of LoVe Goons (Jay, Troy and Ethan) under her command. She is one of the remaining LoVE members from before the takeover and the new leadership. Though she struggles to be an effective leader, her efforts are often undermined by the lack of resources at her disposal, the incompetence of her underlings and sometimes the blatant interference of those above her in the chain of command. Despite this, she has determination on her side and will not give up without a struggle. She is also fiercely loyal to her own small group within the League and will often vouch for them or take the brunt of the responsibility for their mistakes.
Unknown to readers: Leila is the daughter of a high-ranking boss in the Asian Mafia. Due to her family’s patriarchal beliefs about a women’s place in life – denying her the ability to inherit her father’s position – she struck out on her own in an effort to prove herself by rising through the ranks to a position of power. This led her to joining LoVE where she has managed to rise to a leadership position, unfortunately circumstances and changes in the command structure are making her rise to power difficult.
Species: Red Fox
Jay was Leila’s first recruit into LoVE. She rescued him from a life on the streets where he was deeply caught up in the world of drug addiction. With her help, he got onto the straight and narrow path… of sobriety at least. He’s not entirely certain that criminal activities are a good idea, but he is fiercely loyal to Leila and would never dream of questioning any of her commands.
Troy was raised in a family made up primarily of women, all of whom were older than him. As the youngest – and smallest – family member, he was often regulated to the role of ‘dressmaker’s dummy’ for his mother, sisters and grandmother. Finally, fed up with being a living doll, he decided to strike out on his own and joined LoVE. Whatever trouble they might get into, he considers it a far better alternative than the family tailoring business. His temper is notoriously short and he doesn’t always think before acting, but he’s still loyal to Leila and his group.
Species: Canid (unknown)
Ethan is laid back, slovenly and easy going. His motives for joining love were primarily that he liked Leila and the others and wanted to hang out with them. He’s often the kindest and gentlest of the group, if not the most astute, and doesn’t care for mayhem. He’s the most likely to cower during a fight and generally takes up space. Still, he considers Leila and the other trio members to be close friends – virtually family – and would do anything for them.
